Before and after Marmaris

Thumbs up and down
Air Canada missed the bags on the first flight. Not great, but these things happen. What is unacceptable though is they claim to not exactly know where they are despite electronic bar code tags and that there's been 3 subsequent flights to Istanbul. That's incompetence. IMHO luggage tags need to go RFID so they are known at all points in time much easier. Anyway that's the thumbs down thus far.
I asked Huseyin about bars, as we stood by one when Cindy found a place to buy a hair elastic. His answer probably in itself could generate world peace. He's a 41 year old Muslim guy. He said (and this is verbatim) some people go to the mosque, some don't. Some go to the bar, some don't. Some cover their hair, some don't. But it doesn't really matter.
It's almost sad that that seems so profound.
Aside from alcohol being a big point in that religion, doesn't seem like there's any points on smoking, as there's lots of it, seems most religions don't address it. But they're actually a bit discrete like they too know that others don't really want smoke around, most people smoking publicly chose a spot downwind and/or hold it down and behind their hip.
Cindy and I have been intrigued with Bhutan, and as much as I like taking bikes places, the highly literate and quick responding guy I've emailed with there for half a year, plus some co-workers recent stories, plus this travelling with only a carry on thing, has me leaning towards trekking being a low hassle go with the flow option. I suppose this is what backpackers figured out way back. But even with dainty day packs we're entirely comfortable; it's more we've just had to reset expectation a bit.
In the absence of bikes I was really hoping one google search would have me with a week long dirt bike or Land Rover rental, but this far they seem better at renting little VW's or Korean cars or Renault/Fiat/Citroen.
Bafra Lake national park, Herakleia
We hiked around the edge of Bafra lake which had several old castles from different points in history and tombs carved into the rock. Herakleia is the old city. They were all the subsequently opened and looted in ancient history apparently by Africans from Cairo I'm told.
Tomb with cover removed.
We were at the lookout at essentially the bottom left peninsula.Bus driving, marmalades
We've now been told our luggage never made it past Toronto. We're fine with what we have for a while actually.
Gas and diesel are twice our cost dispite proximity to Iran, Iraq, etc. Freshness of foods, and spice availability is mind blowing. Marmalades and jams are superior. Today we had tomato marmalade and pumpkin marmalade. Even the classic orange stuff has left me with enough impression that Smuckers will forever remain over sugared and under par.
We listen to classical music in the car. Huseyin was in the army, got shot through the side on the Iraq border, and one of his lower vertebra exploded in like 8 pieces. He spent two years lying down. He then became a long haul bus driver for 15 years brining people from Tehran, Mosul, Kirkuk, Baghdad, Mecca, Jeddah, Jordan to shop in Istanbul. This was inclusive of the Iraq war and pretty much all the subsequent skirmishes in the area. The bus had beds and he had a stove to cook in the bus and he swears in 15 years he never got out in those countries which surprises me, but he was adamant on that exact point and I think we were having good comprehension then. He said he was a robot driver and had no life but got enough danger pay to now live more happily in Turkey. The amounts he told us would be good for living in south Turkey, but wouldn't leave us desirous of the lifestyle by any stretch. He sees his wife and kids more with this job.
Ephesus
We visited Ephesus today. Very neat. Much older than home.
Cindy is in kitty heaven.
Apparently there are 60 that live in the ruins. They feed them well. This was roofed in the past and where municipal debate occurred.
We'll call this part of main street.
This is the theatre.Fine flooring.
